Christmas Sparkle
To celebrate the Christmas season and to hopefully provide you with some jewelry inspiration, we've gathered some of the characters in cinema best remembered for their noteworthy jewelry!
Diamond, ruby and sapphire galore
“Diamonds are a girl's best friend” – the words have echoed ever since Marilyn Monroe’s character in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes uttered the words in 1953, and who are we to disagree? Marilyn Monroe plays Lorelei Lee and she’s decked out in more diamonds than you can imagine. Sparkly earrings and bracelets but the main piece is the large collar she wears around her neck.
One word. Titanic – do we need to say more? Kate Winslet plays young Rose Dewitt Bukater in the 1997 blockbuster who’s gifted ‘the heart of the ocean’ sapphire by a suiter. This is a giant sapphire heart, which is highly replicated to this day. Harry Winston is the man behind this iconic piece of jewelry and he based it off the Hope Diamond – which you can actually see at the Smithsonian!
When Halloween rolls around each year, you just know someone will dress up as Vivian Ward from Pretty Woman (1990) played by Julia Roberts. But the iconic outfit often worn for Halloween is not the point of this edit, the iconic scene where she and Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, are going to the opera is. Vivian is wearing a lovely off the shoulder gown and has her hair pinned up when she is presented with a lovely diamond and ruby necklace. Vivian is speechless and so are we – to this day.

Nicole Kidman plays showgirl Satine in the 2001 extravaganza Moulin Rouge. Just like Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Satine has an affection for diamonds – she even sings the song ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ from the same film! Satine is then gifted a diamond necklace like you’ve never seen before by a Duke trying to court her. Their relationship is not all that great as her heart is set on someone else, but our hearts for sure belong to the greatness of that necklace.
Pearly goodness
Besides Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s from 1961 is probably one of the most imitated characters from film. Once again, how can we be opposed? Holly Golightly has a very elegant and chic style which is perfected with an oversize pearl necklace.
An understated yet powerful look is worn by Audrey Tautou all through Coco Before Chanel from 2009. As the name states, the film is about the rise of Coco Chanel and her brand. She loved pearls and they’re still very present in Chanel today. Throughout the movie, she wears a double strand pearl necklace – it’s simple, it’s timeless. It goes to show that with pearls even the lightest touch will go a long way.

We can’t discuss the best pearl jewelry in film without including at least one period piece about royalty or high-society. Our pick is Anna Karenina from 2012 with Keira Knightly in the titular role.The film takes place in St. Petersburg and follows along as aristocrat Anna Karenina juggles life and life-changing events. Keira Knightly is dressed in amazing dresses all throughout but most importantly she wears an impressive amount of pearls. The opposite of Coco Chanel, this shows that a heavy touch also goes a long way.
A spectacular woman to end on – Carey Mulligan’s Daisy Buchanan in the 2013 remake of The Great Gatsby. Given that the film takes place in the 1920s, it includes a lavish wardrobe filled with flapper style gowns. Daisy Buchanan is wonderfully dressed the entire film, but she did at one point wear an exceptionally attention grabbing piece of jewelry – a stacked pearl bracelet with an attached diamond ring. Now this is something we can get behind! Daisy isn’t afraid to combine stones and pearls and neither should you.
