In honor of this sparkly holiday, we’ve made a list of some of the most noteworthy outfits from films involving everything glitter and shine so you can get some inspiration on dress, shoes, jewelry and bags. Some of these looks are classics and some are definitely a bit more out there. Let’s dive in!

Rose, Titanic

We’re starting out with a look everyone knows and (most people) loves. Rose Buchanan is played by the lovely Kate Winslet who was awarded with a BAFTA award for her work on Sense and Sensibility in 1995, but she was catapulted into stardom by her work on Titanic in 1997. 

Rose adorns many lovely frocks during the film but the one we want to highlight is the one she wears to the first dinner she shares with Jack. She’s wearing a full length dress with short sleeves and boy, does this dress have it all. It has peach colored satin or silk on the inside and then multiple layers of what appears to be black mesh on top of that. The black parts of the dress are covered in sequins or embellishments which really gives it that extra kick. She’s accessorized with white opera gloves and of course a large sparkly necklace.

Jessica, Who Framed Roger Rabbit

This might seem to have come out of left field, she’s a cartoon character but an iconic one at that! Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit is known all over the world and part of that is because of her dress. It’s tight, strapless, has a low back and a slit which definitely makes it one of the more sexier dresses on this list. 

The reason it’s included on this list is however that it’s completely covered in sparkles. Jessica has opted to let the dress speak for itself and has chosen not to wear jewelry. She does however wear opera gloves in a complementary color.  

Julianne, My Best Friend’s Wedding

Julianne Potter, played by Julia Roberts, is a 27-year-old woman who discovers that she’s in love with her best friend. The problem is that he’s getting married. To make it all better, we’ve decided to shine a light on the dress she wears at the end of the film. At his wedding. Not with her. She’s a bridesmaid. 

The dress is lilac and created in the softest looking silk. It’s off shoulder AND has a sparkly halter neck as well. The silk is shiny and the halter neck is sparkly. She’s opted for a small dainty necklace and a pair of what seems to be diamond earrings. This goes to show that you don’t have to go all out on glitter and sparkle, if that’s not your thing, you can choose to be more subtle and opt for a look in nice materials and let them shine.

Lorelei & Dorothy, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

It’s hard to make any sort of list regarding amazing outfits and not include Lorelei and Dorothy – played by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russel – from the iconic 1935 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. They have so many great outfits to choose from as they’re showgirls and therefore have a ton of costumes. We’ve however chosen to focus on the scene where the two women enter the bar with Ernie Mallone played by Elliot Reid. 

Lorelei is wearing an orange number with sparkles adorning a line running down the dress in the front as well as the top of the dress and the straps. To accessorize she’s wearing a thin shawl around her neck and down her back and relatively large droopy earrings. Dorothy however has chosen to step out in a fully sparkly outfit. Her dress is a dark green and has a wonderful neck with a large diamond in the middle. She’s holding a sparkly clutch in her hands and also wears a large diamond bracelet and ring. But you don’t want to overdo it, so she’s chosen smaller earrings than Lorelei ;) 

These looks go to show that there are many ways to sparkle! Do them all or do some – just do what feels like you.

Satine, Moulin Rouge

Satine, played by Nicole Kidman,  from Moulin Rouge is known as the “Sparkling Diamond” so it comes to absolutely no one's surprise that she’s included in this list. She has a couple of noteworthy outfits but in the honor of New Year’s Eve, we’ve decided to focus on one particular look – her beaded corset and skirt. She wears it as she – very appropriately – sings “Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend” (originally sung by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes). Beads adorn the entire corset in a scalloped pattern and the bottom is covered with fringes also in beads. This look demands no further accessorizing as you’d be able to spot it a mile away, so she’s opted not to wear a necklace but she does however wear, you’ve guessed it, lovely diamond earrings. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s also opted for opera gloves and a top hat with a band of pearls around it. 

This is inspiration for the woman who’s looking to go all out and then some for New Year’s Eve!

I couldn’t help but wonder… could I make this list and not include Carrie Bradshaw's New Year’s outfit from the first film installment of Sex and the City? The answer is, of course, no. 

This look is in stark contrast to the others on this list and is in fact the only one actually worn on New Year’s Eve. It’s also the most casual of them all. Carrie is settling in, watching Meet Me in St. Louis on her own when she gets a call from BFF Miranda who’s also spending the night alone. Upon realizing none of them have to be alone when the clock strikes 12, Carrie decides to run out of the house and go see Miranda. She’s therefore not dressed to the nines but is instead wearing a very relaxed pair of flowy pants and a blouse. As she runs out the door it’s as if she realizes the occasion and grabs a fur coat, heeled Chanel boots, a sparkly bag and a sequined hat, proving that accessories can indeed make or break an outfit. 

This list is only a way to show that wearing sparkles can be done in a plethora of ways! You can opt for sparkly clothing which in and of itself can be done in multiple ways – you can go for a shimmering material like silk or satin or you can opt for bejeweled pieces that’ll really make an impact. You can however also choose to simply use sparkly accessories to ring in the new year in style. Bags, shoes, tights, gloves or jewelry – the choice is yours!
